Our First Impressions of the Tesla Model Y Juniper (Premium)

Nine days is enough time to form impressions.
It is not enough time to form conclusions.
We still know very little about:
long-term reliability
service experience
battery longevity
ownership over several years
This report is simply about our first impressions.
Delivery Was Faster Than Expected
When we placed the order, Tesla estimated:
👉 2–3 weeks
Instead:
Ordered May 14
VIN assigned May 20
Delivered May 23
Just nine days.
That was our first surprise.
Delivery Experience
We took delivery at the Tesla Service Center located about 47 miles from our home.
The process was:
relaxed
personal
unrushed
A Tesla representative was assigned specifically to our delivery and encouraged us to inspect the vehicle thoroughly.
Questions were answered patiently and without pressure.
Did We Find Any Problems?
Yes.
We found two trim defects.
Neither affected operation of the vehicle.
Tesla immediately ordered replacement parts and scheduled a mobile service appointment at our home.
So far, the response has been exactly what we hoped for.
First Thing That Impressed Us
It was a hot day.
Immediately we noticed:
Excellent air conditioning
Excellent ventilated seats
Extremely quiet cabin
Smooth ride
Within minutes it felt very different from the Maverick.
The Learning Curve
The good news:
Most basic functions were easy.
We quickly figured out:
charging
navigation
climate control
FSD operation
The challenge?
The sheer number of settings and options.
There is a lot to learn.
We suspect we'll still be discovering features months from now.
A Surprise We Didn't Expect
Grok.
Using voice commands and conversational interaction with the vehicle has been surprisingly useful.
We've used it for:
navigation
vehicle questions
learning features
The experience feels far more natural than traditional vehicle menus.
FSD: Better Than Expected
This is the reason we bought the car.
And so far:
👉 it has delivered.
Interventions
Roughly half of our drives have included interventions.
That sounds alarming until you understand why.
Most interventions occurred because:
we wanted a different route
we disengaged before parking
we were still learning the automatic parking system
NO interventions were related to driving performance.
The Most Impressive FSD Drive So Far
On Day 3 we made a:
👉 166-mile round trip
The vehicle:
left our home
navigated construction zones
recognized cones
handled traffic
arrived at our destination
returned home
All using FSD.
The entire experience was remarkable.
Any Concerning FSD Moments?
Not yet.
That's probably the biggest surprise.
We've been watching closely.
So far there have been no moments that made us uncomfortable.
Better Than The Demo Drives?
Yes.
Or at least equal.
The difference is that ownership allows longer drives.
And that's where the value becomes apparent.
Experiencing FSD for:
an hour
two hours
several hours
is very different than a 30-minute demo.
The reduction in mental workload is difficult to explain until you've experienced it.
Compared To The Maverick
Ride Quality
Better.
Cabin Noise
Much quieter.
Seats
The Maverick seats may have been slightly more comfortable initially.
But once you factor in:
ventilation
heating
additional adjustments
the Tesla wins overall.
Visibility
Forward and side visibility are excellent.
We had heard concerns about rear visibility.
Those concerns turned out to be largely irrelevant.
One tap on the screen provides a large, clear rear camera view.
Problem solved.
Home Charging
This has been almost comically simple.
We already had:
👉 a NEMA 14-50 outlet
The process is:
Pull in
Plug in
Walk away
That's it.
Range Anxiety
A little.
Not much.
We haven't used a Supercharger yet.
Once we do, we suspect most remaining anxiety will disappear.
Cargo Space
Another surprise.
The Model Y feels larger inside than we expected.
Between:
rear cargo area
lower storage compartments
frunk
There is considerably more storage than first appears.
Do We Miss The Truck Bed?
Not yet.
We have had a pretty good amount of items that normally would have been in the bed of the truck that we just put in the cargo area of the Tesla.
Mary's Take
Favorite Thing
FSD.
Same answer as mine.
Least Favorite Thing
Learning everything.
There are simply a lot of menus, settings, and options.
What's Worse Than Expected?
Tesla's communication model.
Everything goes through the app.
Even scheduling service for the trim repairs happened entirely through messaging.
No phone calls.
No conversations.
No dedicated service advisor.
It works.
But it feels impersonal.
What's Better Than Expected?
The ease of travel.
Not charging.
Not acceleration.
Not technology.
Travel.
Allowing FSD to handle most of the driving workload changes the experience more than we expected.
Would We Order This Exact Vehicle Again?
Today?
Absolutely.
No hesitation.
The Biggest Surprise
After 462 miles, the biggest surprise is:
👉 It's even more fun and useful than we thought it would be.
That's not something we expected to say after spending months trying to convince ourselves not to buy one.

Yes.
The vehicle has met or exceeded nearly every expectation we had.
