Why We Chose It
Lazy G Ranch was conveniently located along our route to Mama Gertie's Hideaway near Asheville — a detour of less than 20 minutes, making it practical for a one-night stop without turning the travel day into a major side trip.
We were looking for a safe and comfortable place to spend the night. What we found was much more interesting than that.
Arrival and Check-In
We arrived at approximately 4:00 p.m. The ranch was easy to find, and the owners met us when we arrived — friendly, welcoming, and helpful without being overbearing. There was plenty of room to maneuver our 67-foot combination, and we never felt getting in or out was a problem.
The RV Sites
Lazy G Ranch has two RV locations. One is reasonably level. The other is not.
Unfortunately, we received the unlevel location. We were able to make it work, but we had to disconnect the truck so we could raise the front of the trailer enough to get it level. That was the only meaningful inconvenience during our stay.
Once settled, we had plenty of room to extend our slides and awning. Electric service and potable water were available, although there was no dump station.

This is a working ranch, not a conventional campground.

A Quiet Night
The ranch was peaceful throughout the evening. We experienced no bothersome farm noise, odors, insects, or other distractions. After a day of towing, we had a quiet night and slept well. Sometimes that alone makes an overnight stop successful. At Lazy G Ranch, it was only part of the experience.
Getting Close to the Bison
The highlight of our stay was the ranch tour. The owners took us into the pasture in their vehicle, explained how they raise the bison, and patiently answered all our questions. The ranch has hundreds of bison, and at one point we were within approximately one foot of them while safely inside the owners' vehicle.
Seeing one bison from a distance is impressive. Sitting near a large herd and watching them move around the vehicle is an entirely different experience.
Visitors are welcome to take photographs from an appropriate distance or while accompanying the owners on the tour — this is not a place where guests should approach the animals independently.
The Ranch Store
Lazy G Ranch also has an attractive store selling bison products and ranch merchandise. We purchased:
Bison steaks
Bison jerky
A bison hat
After trying the meat, we found both the steaks and jerky to be excellent. Harvest Hosts encourages travelers to support the businesses that provide overnight accommodations — in this case, that was easy, because the products were genuinely worth buying.
What Made This Stop Different
Many overnight RV stops are purely functional — you pull in, eat dinner, sleep, and leave the next morning. Lazy G Ranch became part of the trip itself. We learned about raising bison, toured the ranch, spent time near a herd numbering in the hundreds, purchased excellent locally raised meat, and still enjoyed a quiet night with electric and water. That's much more memorable than another night in a parking lot.

What We Would Do Differently
We would ask in advance whether the level RV location was available. Having to disconnect and lower the front of the trailer was manageable, but avoiding that extra work would make a one-night stay even easier. Otherwise, we would not change much.
